Hidden Gems in Peace River, Alberta: Discover the Best-kept Secrets

Hi there, friends! Karma here, coming in with another pawsome blurb for you loyal fans. I’m the proud purebred Staffordshire Terrier in The Pack, with a love for adventure and a nose for sniffing out the best spots in Peace River, Alberta. Let me tell you, this place isn’t just a hidden gem itself; it’s bursting with secret treasures that you and your humans need to check out. Whether you’re a local pup or just visiting, I’ve got the inside scoop on the best-kept secrets that make Peace River the perfect place to explore. Grab your human and leash and dive into some tail-wagging secret adventures that keep calling your name!

1. Misery Mountain Ski Hill: A Winter Wonderland

Okay, don’t let the name fool you—there’s nothing miserable about Misery Mountain. In the winter, this spot transforms into a snowy paradise. While humans strap on their skis and snowboards, we pups can enjoy the crisp air and the beautiful views from the base. If your humans are kind enough to take a break, it’s the perfect spot for a frolic in the snow. Watching the skiers swoosh down the hill is almost as fun as chasing squirrels… almost. Misery Mountain features stunning landscapes and scenery overlooking the Peace River below. This hill also has a chairlift for those, like my dad, who prefer chairlifts to the T-Bar.

Insider tip: Visit in the fall when the mountain trails are painted with vibrant autumn colours. The hiking paths are quiet and serene, perfect for a peaceful stroll with your favourite humans!

Is it just me, or does anyone else dream of shredding slopes 🏂 with their pups?

2. Twelve-Foot Davis Gravesite: A History Lesson with a View

You’d think a dog like me wouldn’t care much about history, but there’s something magical about Twelve Foot Davis’ gravesite. It’s not just about the human who made a big name for himself in the gold rush; it’s also about the incredible panoramic view of Peace River from up there. Standing at the top of the hill, with the wind in my fur and the world spread out below, I feel like the queen of the world (move over, Simba).

It’s the spot that makes you stop and appreciate the beauty of our land—even if you’re just a curious pup like me. This breathtaking spot also offers plenty of parking, walking and hiking trails, picnic tables, panoramic views for photographers, and more, so be sure to encourage your humans to stop in and check out this beautiful spot next time you’re in Peace River, Alberta!

3. Peace River Museum, Archives & Mackenzie Centre

Humans love their museums, and this is a real treat for history buffs and curious canines. While we pups aren’t allowed inside (boo!), the surrounding area is excellent for a walk, and the building itself is steeped in fascinating history. My humans always come out with exciting stories about the fur trade, Indigenous culture, and the early settlers. The Peace River Museum is located in a beautiful part of town right on the banks of the Peace River that flows from mid-April to the end of October yearly; you can even see Misery Mountain from the pretty cool Museum!

If you’re looking for time to rest your paws, the nearby parks and paths are perfect for a stroll while the humans soak up some knowledge.

4. Sagitawa Lookout: A Spot for Dreamers

If you’re anything like me, you love a good view. Sagitawa Lookout is a hidden gem where you can sit, relax, and let your imagination run wild. My humans tell me it’s the best spot for sunrise or sunset, but honestly, any time of day is magical. From the lookout, you can see where the Peace, Smoky, and Heart rivers meet. It’s like nature’s way of showing off. You can find this serene lookout at the top of Judah Hill on Highway 744!

This is my go-to spot for daydreaming about all the treats I’ll get later. Trust me, you’ll love it here.

Sadly, it was a smokey day at the top of Sagitawa Lookout, but it was still one of the best lookouts overlooking Peace River, Alberta!

5. Riverfront Park: The Ultimate Play Zone

Now, let’s talk about Riverfront Park—aka Dog Heaven. This is my favourite spot to stretch my legs and splash in water. The park runs along the Peace River, offering plenty of open space for games of fetch and shaded areas to cool off afterward. It’s also a great place to meet new friends; the other dogs here are always up for a good romp.

There are picnic areas, walking trails, and benches for humans to sit and enjoy the view. But let’s be honest—this park is all about us pups having the time of our lives.

6. Peace Valley Inns’ Courtyard: A Cozy Retreat

The Peace Valley Inns courtyard is a lovely, relaxing spot for those who prefer a more laid-back vibe. The landscaping is beautiful, with plenty of greenery and flowers to sniff. It’s a great place to take a break after exploring the town, and it’s often quiet, making it perfect for some one-on-one time with your humans.

I’ve even heard whispers that they’re pet-friendly, so if you stay in Peace River overnight, this could be your home away from home!

7. Events at Athabasca Hall: Fun for Everyone

Athabasca Hall hosts various events throughout the year, from art shows to community gatherings. While we pets can’t always go inside, the buzz of activity outside is exciting. It’s a great place to people-watch (or dog-watch, if you’re lucky) and soak up the lively atmosphere.

Whenever my humans go to an event here, they come back with big smiles and stories. And when they’re happy, I’m so glad—because happy humans usually mean extra treats for me and my siblings!

8. Cecil Thompson Park: A Peaceful Escape

Sometimes, you need a quiet spot to unwind, and Cecil Thompson Park is perfect. It’s a small, peaceful park with a lovely little pond and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view. The ducks here are fun to watch, though my humans always remind me not to chase them (what a buzzkill).

This is the kind of place where you can relax, recharge, and enjoy the simpler pleasures in life—like a good belly rub in the sunshine.

9. The Peace River Bridge: An Iconic Landmark

Lastly, the Peace River Bridge is a sight to behold. It’s not just a way to cross the river; it’s a symbol of the town’s history and resilience. I love walking across it with my humans, feeling the vibrations as cars pass by and taking in the stunning views of the river below. Now, Peace River has two bridges; the new one opened when I was just a puppy, and the older one has been open since my Grandpa was little!

These bridges remind us of the connection between the town and its people; for us furry babies, it’s just fun to explore.

Did you happen to know? In Peace River, Alberta, you can stroll along the walking path beneath the iconic Peace River Bridge and enjoy stunning views of the river flowing gracefully below!

10. Shaftesbury Ferry Adventure on the Peace River

Oh, the Shaftesbury Ferry! Let me tell you, friends, this is one of the most remarkable experiences you can have in Peace River. It’s a hidden gem that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back. The Shaftesbury Ferry is a tug-operated ferry that crosses the Peace River, connecting the Shaftesbury Trail to Highway 2. For a dog like me, riding on the ferry is like being on an adventure cruise. The gentle rocking of the ferry, the sound of the river lapping against its sides, and the wide-open views of the water make it such a calming experience.

I love exploring the ferry deck, sometimes even sitting on the bench to feel the breeze in my face and catch all the exciting river scents. It’s not just fun for me; my humans love it, too! My humans always talk about how unique it is to have a working ferry like this in such a beautiful setting. The operators are super friendly, and the whole ride is smooth and peaceful; the ferry is also free for all the public! It’s a fantastic way to explore the scenic Shaftesbury Trail, which is lined with gorgeous farmland, rolling hills, and even some historical sites. If you’re looking for a way to slow down and appreciate the beauty of Peace River, the Shaftesbury Ferry is an experience you don’t want to miss. Trust me; it’s pawsitively unforgettable!

The Shaftesbury Ferry is such a convenient ride, but it’s essential to plan! It usually runs daily from 7:30 am to 11:00 pm MST, depending on the seasons’ river conditions and regular maintenance. The ferry season is generally from May to the end of October yearly! There’s a weight limit of around 63,500 kilograms (or about as much as a herd of well-fed cattle, impressive, right?). It’s only about 28 kilometres southwest of Peace River on Highway 684; the ferry is also 19 kilometres from Grimshaw and 41 kilometres north of Tangent on Highway 740, making it an easy and scenic drive no matter which town you’re coming from. My humans always say it’s a great way to save time while soaking in incredible views!
